The history of the city of Izmir dates back to 3000 BC. The city has hosted many civilizations such as the Hittites, Ionians, Lydians, Persians, Macedonians and Romans. Known as Smyrna in ancient times, Izmir was an important trade center, especially during the Roman and Byzantine periods. During the Ottoman Empire, Izmir became an important trade center between the East and the West. With the establishment of the Republic of Turkey after the War of Independence, the city became one of the most important cities of modern Turkey.
